Gloria Blum is available to lead workshops in schools, hospitals,
residential institutions and for organizations to demonstrate the
techniques and principles described in the Guide, "Feeling Good About Yourself" and the DVD, "I Can Say 'No!'" Gloria starts each
workshop by creating a safe environment where clients, parents, therapists and
any other participants feel at ease and learn highly useful techniques in
the areas of self-esteem, socialization skills and sex information.
Methods are demonstrated step-by-step, questions are answered specifically and
ideas become usable and practical. Disabled participants enjoy the workshop
immensely. Parents are extremely grateful as they gain confidence in
dealing with the day to day problems of raising their disabled sons and daughters, and as they
see new potentials for progress. Teachers find themselves reinvigorated
and ready to return to the classroom armed with new ideas, better ways, and
more confidence. Workshops can be tailored to the needs of each situation, from
half-day lectures to three day programs. Follow-up visits are also recommended.
WORKSHOP DESCRIPTION:
People who are
slow learners grow up, and as they do, they can become more independent and
responsible. Like all of us, they need to develop a positive sense of
themselves that can support their advance into the world of adulthood. They
need to learn how to communicate effectively with non-disabled adults. They
need particular attention in order to learn appropriate social behavior.
Growing up in a sheltered environment, they often lack experiences required for
independent decision making.
Our experience
has shown that when slow learners are provided with the necessary training in
these living skills, not only are their lives enriched, but also those around them
soon notice the appropriate behavioral changes associated with responsible
adulthood.
Gloria's
workshops demonstrate a variety of techniques that can be used to assist in
developing self-esteem, socialization skills (including teaching about appropriate and inappropriate
touching - to prevent sexual exploitation) and effective communication.
Verbal and
non-verbal techniques appropriate for all levels of disability will be
introduced and demonstrated.
She has presented and
consulted nationally and internationally in the areas of self esteem, socialization
and sex information to prevent victimization.
